Google Put a Speed Bump on Pixel. Here's What It Gets Right and What It Can't Do.

October 2, 2026 · 4 min read

Google just told a lot of people that one of the best things their phone can do is make them wait.

That is the gist of Pause Point, a Digital Wellbeing feature that adds a pause before you open a distracting app of your choice. It launched on the Pixel 11 series, and in the September Pixel Drop it is coming to the Pixel 6 and newer, according to 9to5Google.

We are iPhone people, so we did not test it ourselves. Everything below about how it works comes from that reporting. But we have opinions, because this is a mechanic we think about all day.

Why a pause works

The best evidence we know of is a PNAS study of the one sec app, which puts a short breathing pause in front of apps you pick. The finding that matters is simple: a moment of friction before opening cut down how often people went into those apps. We could not pull the paper's exact figures this week, so we are not quoting any. Go read it.

The reason it works is not mysterious. Most phone checking is not a decision. It is a thumb moving before you have thought about it. A pause turns an automatic move back into a choice, and sometimes the choice is "actually, no."

What a default pause can't do

Here is our take. A pause is one mechanic, and it has limits.

None of that makes Pause Point bad. It makes it a start. Every pause Google ships is proof that the model works, and we are glad to see it go mainstream. The hard part is keeping the speed bump from turning into wallpaper.

The iPhone side

As far as we can tell, iOS still has no built-in equivalent for adults. Apple's recent energy has gone into controls for kids, which we covered in our Ask to Browse piece. Adults managing themselves got nothing like it.

If you are on iPhone, the options are the free friction-first apps and the schedules you build yourself. We went through what the evidence says about them in do app blockers work. Pick the one or two apps that hurt, add friction there, and change the rules when your habits change.

The takeaway

Making people wait ten seconds is not a feature. It is an admission that the reflex is the problem. We agree, and we think the next step is friction that adapts, not friction that repeats.

BreakOff is friction built around you. Pause the apps that hijack your reflexes, protect the hours that matter, and keep the rules in step with your habits. Try it free on iPhone.
